Acidic gas-phase pollutants and their contribution to the atmospheric oxidative capacity and acidity in Athens

Funding: Ministry of Development and Investments

Description: The project aims to extend the current understanding of the role of gas-phase acids on the oxidative capacity of the atmosphere via high-resolution in-situ measurements and model simulations. HNO3, HCl, SO2 and HONO concentrations, as obtained during the period 2014-2016 in the city of Athens (Greece), will be analyzed to determine their primary sources as well as the factors driving their variability and transformation processes. State-of-the-art modelling tools will be further used to determine the atmospheric levels of the oxidants involved in their production pathways and consumption processes, as well as their partition in the particulate phase via thermodynamic calculations. Model simulations will be validated against observations and overall the contribution of atmospheric acidity to the gas-particle partition will be determined.
