
Research Associates

Ioannis Koletsis holds a Ph.D. in Meteorology and is a Physicist-Meteorologist. Since 2023, he has served as a Senior Technical Environmental Scientist at the Institute for Environmental Research and Sustainable Development of the National Observatory of Athens (IERSD/NOA). He has been working at NOA as a Research Associate since 2006, and during the periods 2013-2014 and 2019-2021, he participated in research projects at the Hellenic Centre for Marine
Research and the Agricultural University of Athens. He holds a Physics degree from the University of Ioannina in 2002, as well as a Master’s degree (2006) and a Ph.D. (2010) in Meteorology-Climatology and Atmospheric Physics, both with “Excellent” grades.
He has contributed as research staff to numerous projects focused on numerical simulations using NOA’s meteorological models. He is part of the scientific-technical staff of the National Observatory of Athens, working in the management and maintenance of the NOA/Meteo.gr automatic weather station network (NOAAN), where he oversees the operational monitoring of this network. Additionally, he is a member of the weather forecasting team at the Meteo.gr operational unit at NOA.
Since 2016, he has been involved in NOA’s educational meteorology team “Peri Anemon & Ydaton” (About Winds & Waters), organizing and presenting the namesake educational program. He organised an interactive meteorology exhibition in collaboration with the TITAN Group and has participated in festivals and conferences to popularize the science of Meteorology (weather/climate). As part of NOA’s collaboration with the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), he has been responsible for designing and implementing educational programs such as “The Climate is Changing” and “Sustainable Planet” from 2018 up to the present. He has attended and earned certifications for successfully passing exams in seminars organized by the National Center for Public Administration and Local Government Training Institute, including “Violation of Children’s Rights: Phenomenology and the Framework for Child Protection” and “Training Educators in Creating and Processing Interactive Educational Materials.”
Finally, he has been awarded for his presentations at two international meteorology conferences, receiving the “Best Young Researcher” award. He has also been recognized three times by the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY) for his academic excellence during undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Additionally, he has received awards for NOA’s educational programs at the Education Leaders Awards (2021 and 2023) and for the “Peri Anemon & Ydaton” program at the Green Brand Awards (2022).
