i-ALARMS : Ionian-Adriatic early warning monitoring system (2018-2021)

The i-ALARMS project aimed to improving the protection of life and property from natural disasters and contribute to the EU policy guideline for the sustainable development and protection of nature and more specifically to the prevention and preparedness in case of weather–related natural disasters in the region of Ionian Sea of Greece and South Albania.

The activities of the project included:

  • development of an operational early warning system for extreme weather events (storms, floods) and high fire risk based on high resolution weather forecast models adapted to the specific region, which is available to the public through a web page (http://ialarms.physics.uoi.gr/),
  • training of local and civil protection authorities for natural disaster prevention and the general public to increase the level of self-protection of the citizens,
  • collection and dissemination of information on historical natural disasters in the area,
  • demonstration of the value of modern weather systems like weather radars for early warning for extreme weather events with the operation of a mobile radar for one year in the area.
