The Urban Background Atmospheric Pollution Monitoring Superstation has been operating since the end of 2013 in Thissio, at the central facilities of the National Observatory of Athens, and is one of the main stations of the National Infrastructure PANACEA for the study of atmospheric composition and climate change (PANACEA – PANhellenic infrastructure for Atmospheric Composition and climatE change). It serves as a representative urban background station for Athens, reflecting broader pollution levels, given its lack of direct proximity to road junctions or major point sources of emissions. <\/p>\n\n

The Superstation operates intensively during the winter months to monitor the smog phenomenon, and systematically and continuously throughout the year to study atmospheric pollution concerning the levels and physical characteristics of suspended particulate matter, their optical properties, and their chemical composition. It also monitors the processes of production and transport of particulate pollutants in the Eastern Mediterranean, determines their climatic role in the atmosphere through their interaction with radiation, identifies anthropogenic sources in the urban fabric of Athens, and assesses their effects on health and ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n

The Superstation’s state-of-the-art equipment (http:\/\/apcg.meteo.noa.gr\/index.php\/infrastructure\/thissio-air-monitoring-station-ams<\/strong><\/a>) includes analyzers for basic gaseous (NO, NO2, O3, SO2, CO) and particulate (PM10, BC) pollutants, measuring systems for the optical properties of particles (scattering, absorption), and low- and high-volume samplers for different particle size fractions (PM10 and PM2.5), through which filters are collected for further chemical analyses by the Laboratory of Atmospheric Chemistry of IERSD. The state-of-the-art equipment provides near real-time data on both the chemical composition of fine suspended particulate matter (Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor – ACSM) and the distribution of suspended particulate matter (SMPS and GRIMM) with a resolution of a few minutes. Since December 2018, greenhouse gas measurements (CO2 and CH4) have also been conducted, and the Superstation’s capabilities are being enhanced with equipment for monitoring high-resolution volatile organic compound levels. <\/p>\n\n

The Superstation generally functions as a hub for specialized measurements, hosting cutting-edge equipment for continuous automated monitoring of various atmospheric components, in collaboration with other Research and Academic institutions.<\/p>\n\n
